If it seems there have been a lot of Conversations with Jon Leonoudakis, it’s because he’s constantly putting out new product. In this case, it’s Ball Four Turns 40, a documentary about that watershed memoir by the irrepressible Jim Bouton.
In our latest chat, we talk about the gathering of the Baseball Reliquary in 2011 — the actual anniversary of the seminal publication — where Bouton and fellow Seattle Pilot teammates Greg Goosen and Tommy Davis — along with a few others connected with the club — reminisced about the salad days of the one-season franchise.
Leonoudakis has released several documentaries for his baseball series The Sweet Spot, often dealing with social issues such as racism and women in the game. There’s even a set of baseball cards associated with the Sweet Spot.
During our latest Conversation, it dawned on me — after many years — that one of the first interviews I did on the Bookshelf was a three-parter with Bouton when this Reliquary event was coming out. You can hear that here. (I also did this piece on “The Legacy of Ball Four” for the Huffington Post back in 2010.)
Ball Four Turns 40 dropped Nov. 12 and is available to view online for $8.
